A hairdressing student from Solihull College & University Centre recently achieved first place in the WorldSkills regional hairdressing competition. Kelly Boyd won first place in the five hour long independent competition in which her and her peers, Paula Robinson and Jess Nicolson, were tasked with creating an editorial look and a commercial cut and colour.
Hairdressing lecturer, Marc Suddell, explains how the opportunity came about: “I had a conversation with my group and gave them the WorldSkills brief and these three talented students jumped at the chance to take part.” Marc trained the students and helped them practice ahead of the competition. During half term the students continued working on their techniques from home. Marc continues: “We then submitted a ‘hair up’ to qualify through to the Midlands heat and we got an email to say that all three had got through to the regionals!”350 people had entered the Midlands heat and Kelly beat approximately 20 students to come in first place.
The three talented students have now completed their course at the College and are set to start their careers in the industry. Marc shares: “This course is all about honing our students creativity and talents and preparing them to thrive in the industry, but also to shape it.”
Marc has been dedicated the past 16 years of his life to teaching hairdressing and believes in inspiring creativity in his students so they can achieve the best of their potential.
Speaking about Kelly, Paula, and Jess, Marc adds: “The dedication that the students put into the competition was remarkable. Their professionalism was commended by the judges, and I felt very proud of them. It was a fantastic day!”
