Starting an apprentice

You will need an Apprenticeship Service Account to start an apprentice. The Apprenticeship Service is the Government website you will use to manage apprenticeship funding.

Most organisations enlist training providers to carry out the recruitment process on their behalf. Training providers promote vacancies, shortlist and interview candidates prior to submitting to employers for a final decision.

Consider where you need an apprentice and what their responsibilities will be. This well help you define a clear job role for an apprentice. Next include essential and desirable skills and the key duties of the job role.

You should also include the location, wage, and duration. Your training provider can find an appropriate standard for the job role and post on the government website.

Promote the apprenticeship

Now that your apprenticeship is uploaded on the Apprenticeship Service website, you can promote your vacancy. You can do this using your social media profiles, email marketing and promoting on your website.

Your training provider will also promote your vacancy. This ensures you attract applications for the role.

Shortlist and Interview Candidates

Your training provider can carry out shortlisting and initial interviewing on your behalf. They will find the best candidates for the role and forward their information to you. As an employer, you can carry out interviews with the shortlisted candidates and will always make the final decision regarding an apprentice

Select an apprentice and create an apprenticeship agreement

Once you find the right apprentice, you should offer them the position and provide a contract. In conjunction with your training provider, you can confirm dates and start times.

Once the apprenticeship is confirmed, you will need to create an apprenticeship agreement stating the apprenticeship is in a particular trade or occupation that meets the needs of the apprenticeship standard.
